For all my friends that played SWG with me, you should check this out! This is an MMO being developed that draws heavily from the likes of SWG and UO. It is an open world, skill based MMO. There are no levels. There are tons of skills that have no limits on how many you raise up.
It takes place in a fictional futuristic world where there is the old government (OWON - One World, One Nation), and a rebellion (FPR - Free People's Republic) as the two main factions fighting each other. There can also be independent nations (guilds), called Rogue Nations, that are anything from neutral to allied or at war with other guilds/nations.
The game has combat (both PvE and PvP), crafting, resource gathering and trade comparable to SWG, and a lot of RP potential. It even has entertainers like SWG. It has several types of player housing, and also player cities.
Honestly, it is very similar to SWG but without the SW setting. Combat is with ranged weapons (pistols, automatic weapons, rifles, heavy, flamethrowers, etc.), and melee (swords, axes, etc.).
I've been playing since December, and it's amazing how much they have improved the game in that time. It currently is in a late alpha/early beta stage. They are constantly adding or fixing things. The rumors are that it will go live by the end of the year.
The best part is once you buy the game there is no monthly fee, and right now the game is on sale through Steam for 25% off.
Check out the website: https://www.therepopulation.com/
If you decide to play let me know and I'll tell you which server I'm on. I would love to get a guild going again like we had in SWG! My buddy Tig just joined me there and we're bouncing around some ideas for a good guild/town. Right now we're thinking of sort of a wild west theme, with an independent town with a saloon and traders.

Yes, we could use someone to head up the trading company/store!

We're on the east coast server (Kenji?). You have to pick one of the two main factions to start, and so we're with the FPR. I've been hanging around Freedomtown mostly, too.
After you create your character you'll go to the FPR (or OWON) training facility, which is the special starter area. Take advantage of learning all you can there. You can start figuring out how to use weapons, crafting, medical (highly recommended to learn!), and other basics of the game. You'll also be given weapons to use, or crafting tools/supplies.
Probably won't be able to log in during the day, but I'll try to be on tonight. Look up my name - Mako Isurus.
Oh, and one final note. This is in late alpha/early beta stage, and so when release happens there will be a wipe. And though things are still being added and changed, it's very fun to play as is now, and getting in early you will learn how the game works. So you don't need to worry about making mistakes as much, as you'll learn from it and not do the same once the game is released.
Edit: One more thing! About the funding of the game, you pay to purchase the game in the beginning, but there are different levels of membership. The basic is the silver package, then there is the gold, platinum, and some higher ones.
Here are the differences:
Silver Package - Silver membership, 1 Repop Token, Name Reservation, and Early Access (play now). Additional character, Inventory, Bank, Shared Bank, Mission, and Auction Slots. Access to City Council and Nation Leadership options.
Gold Package - Silver and Gold membership, 1 Repop Token, 1 Day Headstart, Name Reservation, and Early Access. More character, inventory, bank, shared bank, mission, and auction slots. Ability to become mayor and run a player city.
Platinum Package - Silver, Gold, and Platinum membership, 2 Repop Tokens, 2 Days Headstart, Name Reservation, and Early Access. More character, inventory, bank, shared bank, mission, and auction slots. Ability to create a nation.
Platinum+ Package - Silver, Gold, and Platinum membership, 3 Repop Tokens, 3 Days Headstart, Name Reservation, $50 in Store Credit, Founder Title, and Early Access.
I know to start your own nation you need Platinum level, and so I've already upgraded to that.
The Repop tokens are like a currency that can be used to purchase special items once the game goes live. Mostly cosmetic stuff, and not like a legendary weapon or armor or anything like that. Being a skill based game anyone can use any weapon, but the damage is based on your skill at using it and/or attachments you put on it.
